Vardisperi (pink) Rkatsiteli

LOCATE US Mukuzani
Description:

During the harvest in Mukuzani in 1948, pickers of Rkatsiteli grapes noticed two twigs with differently-colored clusters. "Currently, this variation - Rkatsiteli with pink grains - is being propagated at the Telavi Zonal Test Station of the Institute of Viticulture and Enology, which differs from the usual Rkatsiteli, except in color, with more clumsy clusters and high sugar content.

Academician Niko Ketskhoveli in his work "Cultivated Plant Varieties in Georgia" (1957 C.) terms Pink Rkatsiteli as an independent variety, and praises the wine made from its grapes. Pink Rkatsiteli lasts long unpicked and therefore it is possible to leave its clusters on the vine for a long time and achieve a very high sugar content. It differs from ordinary Rkatsiteli in taste and leaf shape. It is characterized by an unusual sugar content: on a refractometer scale of 35 and more.

V. Loladze was the one to take care of this variety since 1948, when pickers found it. Pink Rkatsiteli originated from ordinary Rkatsiteli through spontaneous bud mutation. The chance that a new variety of ordinary vine will appear spontaneously is one in a million, and this is exactly what happened in the case of the pink Rkatsiteli. That is why today we can freely say that this is an independent variety.
